What is MEMFIL's Ultrafiltration Membrane?
MEMFIL's ultrafiltration membranes are in the form of hollow fiber. The membrane is made from polymer composite that has billions of tightly controlled microscopic pores of 0.01 microns nominal in size. The ultrafiltration hollow fiber membrane is in symmetric configuration which is capable for both direction of filtration (outside-in or inside-out filtration). The ultrafiltration membrane material is a modified polymer with hydrophilic characteristic that exhibits high flux filtration.
Ultrafiltration is a separation process using ultrafiltration membranes with pore sizes in the range of 0.1 to 0.01 micron. Ultrafiltration is a filtration technology that removes suspended and dissolved solids of high molecular weight substances respectively from water or other liquids. Low molecular weight organic and ions such as sodium, calcium, magnesium chloride and sulfate are not removed by ultrafiltration membrane. This process is easy to realize and more importantly, without extensive chemical additives and with very low energy usage.
Water naturally flows through the pores from the inside-out of the ultrafiltration membrane wall under very low pressure. The pores physically block particles, turbidity and pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and cysts. Most current water treatment technologies are based on absorption, concentration or intensity which can be affected by sudden spike in turbidity or pathogen concentration. MEMFIL's ultrafiltration membranes provide water filtration using physical size exclusion resulting in a consistent supply of high quality treated water regardless of the inlet quality. The ultrafiltration membrane not only filters but also disinfects the water in one step. |

| MEMFIL's ultrafiltration membrane operates from the inside to the outside during filtration. This means that process fluid flows through the center of the hollow fiber and permeate passes through the ultrafiltration membrane fiber wall to the outside of the ultrafiltration membrane fiber. Tangential flow can help limit membrane fouling. Other operating techniques that can be employed with hollow fiber ultrafiltration membrane systems include backwashing with permeate at reverse flow. |
